These thatched cottages were built by wealthy incomers to the small fishing village of Sidmouth in the early 1800s who were seeking some kind of rural idyll. They built their cottages with Gothicised windows, carved eaves, balconies and verandas and I regret to say, they also built them a little too close to the sea.
