I have long been fascinated by the patterns left in the sand by the retreating sea and much prefer to approach my coastal paintings when the tide is out. In this painting there is the added delight of the sun breaking through the cloud shadows and dancing over the sand and although Stepper Point and Gulland Rock anchor this image to Polzeath, it is as near as I get to a completely ‘abstract’ image.
