The view is to the south-west in the evening, half a mile or so below the village of Aveton Gifford and the painting shows quite clearly the small tidal ford which is marked out by the tall posts on either side of the road (it’s well under water at high tide). A few years ago I made a canoe trip down the river to Bantham and back from here, with a friend and we misjudged the tides and ended up wading ashore through the mud in the dark! Never again.
