Plein-air painting is a great challenge and one that I really enjoy. Camped up on the cliffs, everything I am looking at is changing, the waves, the tide, the light and the figures and I remind myself that I am not pretending to be a ‘human camera’. I am there simply to make a painting but, on this occasion, when a woman climbed out of the sea and onto the rocks, I could not resist her climbing into the painting too.
