Although actually walking in the rain can be really unpleasant, particularly if you are cold and soaked to the skin, certain kinds of squally weather can generate really dramatic lighting effects, particularly in mountainous regions where the cloud-shadows on the ground cut up the land into striking patterns. This painting is as much about light as place and I have emphasised the brilliant calm horizontal light on the lake to contrast with the near vertical shafts of light between the clouds.
