This is a beautiful and useful shallow platter with a broad stable base . I chose his open form to show off the lovely 'ripple' figuring which looks like a 'mother-of-pearl ' sand pattern . These kind of markings are relatively rare because they only form in wood that is highly stressed. In this case the wood came from the base of a very large ash tree that had become hollow over tIme and eventually toppled in a storm Ripple figure is much prized by makers and in sycamore it is used for the back of the best violins and is refered to as 'fiddle -back'.
